While there are shoes out there that are made specifically for squatting, you do not need to spend that much money on a pair if you are just getting started.

A pair of shoes such as these vans that have a flat sole will be enough if you are a beginner. This was my personal choice when I got started.

Lifting Belt

For beginners, understanding when and how to use a lifting belt is crucial; it should be worn once you are performing heavy lifts, particularly squats, and deadlifts. A general rule of thumb is to start using a belt once you are lifting roughly 1.5 times your body weight. Using a lifting weight all the time before this general weight mark will stop your core muscles from engaging.

Wrist Straps


Lastly, wrist straps also fall into the category of belts, where using them too early is not recommended. Lifting straps wrap around the grip of the barbell or machine you’re using, and prevent your hands from sliding off. Lifting straps are good gym accessories for people who are struggling to engage the right muscles due to their grip weakening. For example, if you are doing seated rows, your weakening grip might prevent you from properly engaging your back during your set. But you do not want to use these too early, as doing so will prevent your grip strength from improving.
